Actually Squirrel Bait, there is no way you got anywhere near that many IU's of D. If you are over 30, you've already lost much of your bodies natural ability to synthesize D from UV radiation and cholesterol.

The sun is getting stronger and the days are getting longer, even here in Wisconsin.

Some people are coming to the office with nice tans obtained by sunning themselves for several hours. Others have come back from winter getaways to Florida, Arizona, or the tropics, also sporting nice, dark tans.

Several people, in fact, were so confident that sunning themselves provided sufficient vitamin D that they reduced their usual dose. Some even stopped their vitamin D altogether.

But, when blood levels of 25(OH) vitamin D were checked, they were virtually all low, sometimes as low as <20 ng/ml. Yet all had nice tans.

Why does this happen? Why would people with dark tans remain deficient in vitamin D?

One big factor is age: Anyone over 40 years old is fooling themselves if they think that a tan ensures raising vitamin D levels to a desirable range. Also, the more you tan, the more melanin skin pigment accumulates, and the more vitamin D activation in the skin is blocked.

Weight is another factor: Heavier people need more vitamin D, sometimes three- or four-fold more than slender people.

Why does aging result in inefficient skin activation of vitamin D? It seems that, once we are beyond our reproductively useful years, this ticking clock of aging gets triggered. The older we get, the less activation of vitamin D occurs in our skin, the less of the youth-maintaining, disease-preventing benefits of vitamin D we obtain with sun exposure.

The message: Don't rely on a tan to gauge the adequacy of vitamin D. Maybe that works when you're 16 years old, but not at age 50 or 60. There's only one way to know your vitamin D status: a blood level of 25(OH) vitamin D.
So, do you gents know your serum levels of vitamin D?

There are at-home test kits available now. http://typ.trackyourplaque.com/products/Default.aspx

Don't fret! just find out what your current levels of D are. Then just supplement with D3 gelcaps. I take these, 2 per day for 5000IU's:

Keep in mind:

--You want D3 AKA Cholecalciferol.

--Avoid tablets. The liquid form is the most effective (gelcaps).

--You can get D3 from fish livers or Sheeps wool (lanolin). I prefer the lanolin derived type.

I still believe sunlight exposure is critical to human health. Science has only scratched the surface in regards to how important daily sun exposure is.

Wouldn't eating more cholesterol help as well? Most of my research has shown that high cholesterol consumption is not bad for you and that it supports proper production of sex hormones like testosterone.

Do you disagree with what I posted? Care to elaborate?

Dr. William Davis is a cardiologist I've been reading about for a while. He is SPOT ON based on my research.

Sit in the sun all you like because it IS good for you. The science however is pretty clear in regards to our dwindling ability to synthesize D from sunlight. That's just how we are made.

You know what's funny about cholesterol? It's produced naturally by our bodies even if we avoid it in our diets. The less cholesterol we eat, the more our livers produce because cholesterol is a ESSENTIAL HORMONE. Sadly, since Statin drugs are the #1 seller on the planet, cholesterol will continue to be demonized.

The way I approach this matter is:

High HDL cholesterol is good.

High LDL cholesterol can be good and bad.

High VLDL cholesterol is VERY BAD.

High Triglycerides are VERY BAD.
